Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) worked on local casino and old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, this new cast’s suavely controlled gestures away from love and threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will stylishly assertive images (including his political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a low profile classic of your own genre.” [ ten ]

While the patch observe a common trend, the brand new characterizations is actually new while the shows suitable to help you overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you will relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney contact. Uncommon cam bases come along occasionally so you can intensify appeal and you may temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing as the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, new copywriter and you can associate producer, also helps with making it a flaccid manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its mostly a point of watching Mr. Powell proceed through his paces smartly if you are a big throw out of stars and performers promote him vintage assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little lady just who brings about the finest in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you can slinky vixen exactly who becomes him for the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a special able journey given that a weary police inspector exactly who eventually closes the truth. A great deal of drinking and smoking is carried out because of the most of the concerned.” [ 12 ]
